NABIE Has Evolved into ABID
For more than three decades, the National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers has been dedicated to advancing excellence in building inspection, forensic engineering, and professional education. Since its founding in 1989, NABIE has brought together engineers committed to protecting the built environment through technical expertise, ethical practice, continuing education, and collaboration.
Today, NABIE has evolved into the Association of Building Inspection and Design Professionals. This is not the creation of a new organization. Rather, it is the natural evolution of the organization members have built and supported for more than 35 years.
While the name has changed, the mission, leadership, values, and commitment to professional excellence remain the same. Our history continues. Our community continues. Our commitment continues.
Why the Change?
The building industry has changed dramatically since NABIE was established. Today’s building projects are increasingly collaborative, bringing together professional engineers, architects, building inspectors, forensic consultants, building scientists, designers, restoration specialists, and other professionals whose expertise contributes to safer, stronger, and more resilient buildings.
Throughout its history, NABIE has served as a respected organization for engineers specializing in building inspection. As the profession has evolved, so has the membership. ABID better reflects the broad community served today while honoring the engineering foundation upon which NABIE was built.
Simply stated: ABID is NABIE, evolved to better represent today’s profession.
Our Relationship with NSPE Continues
ABID proudly remains an Affinity Group of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The affiliation with NSPE continues as before, reinforcing ABID’s commitment to engineering excellence, ethical practice, continuing education, and professional leadership.
What This Means for Current NABIE Members
Current NABIE members do not need to submit a new membership application. Because ABID is the continuation of NABIE, your relationship with the organization remains intact.
However, as part of the transition to a new membership platform and website, members need to renew through the ABID website to remain active and continue receiving member benefits.

Was my NABIE membership transferred to ABID?
ABID is the evolution of NABIE, not a new organization. Existing NABIE members do not need to submit a new membership application. However, all members must renew through the new ABID website to activate their membership in the new system.
How do I renew my membership?
Visit ABIDpro.org, select Renew Membership, complete your renewal, and create your new ABID account. Once complete, you will have access to the Member Portal, directory, resources, and member benefits.
Why am I not listed in the Member Directory?
The new Member Directory includes members who have renewed through the ABID website and completed their member profile. After renewing, log in and complete your profile to be included in the directory.
Is ABID still affiliated with NSPE?
Yes. ABID continues to be an Affinity Group of the National Society of Professional Engineers. The commitment to professional excellence, ethics, and education remains unchanged.
What benefits do I receive as an ABID member?
